Description
This series consists of three 4-day-long workshops, completed over the course of
3 to 4 months. During the intervals, participants complete additional projects in
their workplaces and present their results to their classmates. The three courses
are:
Course 1 - Value stream design for lean healthcare systems
Through a progressive series of hands on simulations, understand the key principles
for structuring and managing lean health care operations and the benefits in efficiency
and control that ensue. Learn a systematic approach to mapping and assessing current
state of a health care value stream such as inpatient care from admission to discharge.
Design a future state that implements lean principles to improve value-add patient
experience and create work flow. This includes reducing patient queues and synchronizing
information flows through application of pull principles. Complete real world case
studies with full complexity or, if delivered on site, complete a study in your
facilities to create a detailed blueprint for lean transformation an important care
delivery operation.
Course 2 - Lean healthcare operations and basic tools
In a series of hands on exercises , apply the key lean tools that support a lean
medical operation: 5S workplace organization; ; built-in, visual controls; standardized
work and mistake proofing; and setup reduction for applications such as trauma and
operating rooms. Explore the principles of pull systems for patient flow management
and material controls. When this course is delivered on site, several teams can
learn by applying these tools to complete key transformation projects to support
the future state design developed for the value stream addressed in Course 1. .
Participants will.
Course 3 – Managing a lean healthcare system
Explore the role of people in a lean system that is constantly learning and improving.
Apply a variety of team building and problem solving strategies including C4, Six
Sigma, and TRIZ, focusing on how to teach these methods to teams. Create a Daily
Management System for an effective workplace that teaches and engages team members,
fostering higher levels of performance and employee satisfaction. Build a suggestion
system that not only allows all medical and support team members to contribute to
improved operations, but also enhances their problem solving and communication skills.
Target Audience
This series is designed for change agents and leaders responsible for implementing
your transformation strategy and teaching the organization the skills it needs to
continuously improve. The series is intellectually rigorous but is tailored to the
audience to be appropriate for all team members. When completed as part of the Strategic
Transformation Partnership or Community Action Partnership, the series is also physically
rigorous, with long working days gathering data, analyzing processes, building things,
moving equipment, and a variety of other tasks. We have had CEOs, Presidents, physicians
and clinicians, and all levels of administrators, supervisors, and team members
successfully complete this series.
